About Us
Michael B. Sutton and Funk Therapy: The Comeback of a Soul Legend
Michael B. Sutton isn’t new to the music scene—he’s been a key player for over 40 years. Back in the ’70s, he was discovered by Stevie Wonder and launched his career at Motown Records, where he worked with legends like Smokey Robinson, Michael Jackson, and The Supremes. He penned unforgettable tracks like “There Will Come a Day” and contributed to Michael Jackson’s “Cinderella Stay Awhile.”
In the ’80s, Michael found success with his then-wife, Brenda Sutton, as the duo Mike & Brenda Sutton, delivering dance hits like “Don’t Let Go of Me (Grip My Hips and Move Me).” But after their divorce in 1999, Michael took a step back from the spotlight.
Fast forward to 2017, and Michael’s new wife, Anissa Boudjaoui Sutton, had a bold idea. She knew that people, especially in Europe, still loved Michael’s hits and believed it was time for a fresh start. “Michael, the world hasn’t forgotten you,” she told him. “Let’s show them you’re back—with a new wife, new music, and a new groove!”
Anissa encouraged him, saying, “With all the challenges you’ve faced and overcome, it’s time to share that healing power. Now is the moment to bring back the power of healing music and help people through it.” She added, “You know all the greatest musicians who have played for major artists across funk, soul, and R&B. Let’s gather them and create more incredible tracks. Your production skills, your musicianship, your voice—everything God gave you is a gift. It’s time to use it to inspire and heal.”
That’s how The Sound of LA was born. Together, Michael and Anissa launched the label to revive his career and bring back the sounds of real funk, soul, and disco. Anissa merged her ventures, Pump It Up Magazine and Editions LA, with the label, creating a powerhouse for music, branding, and promotion. But their work didn’t stop there.
Both Michael and Anissa are songwriters and publishers. Michael oversees Linden Street Music, while Anissa runs Editions LA, making them a dynamic duo in the music publishing world. “We’re not just creating music; we’re building a legacy that celebrates the art of songwriting and supports new and timeless voices,” says Anissa.
Their latest project, Funk Therapy, is a perfect blend of Michael’s Motown roots and modern vibes. While Michael handles the music as producer and songwriter, Anissa plays a vital role in branding, marketing, press, and yes, songwriting too. Together, they’re proving that music is more powerful when it’s a true collaboration.
“I’m back with new music, a new mission, and an incredible wife who believes in me and the power of funk to move people,” says Michael.
And just to set the record straight—this is Michael B. Sutton. No, it’s not his son. At 75 years young, Michael is still grooving, proving that funk, soul, and disco never go out of style.
“Funk Therapy is more than music,” Michael says. “It’s a movement. It’s my way of saying to the world: I’m here, I’m back, and I’m ready to make you move.”
So if you’ve been craving the real-deal funk and soul, look no further. With Michael and Anissa at the helm, Funk Therapy is here to remind us all why we fell in love with the groove in the first place—and why it’s here to stay.

About Funk Therapy
Funk Therapy is a celebration of the authentic '70s and '80s soul, disco, and funk. The band's main influences include soul legends like Marvin Gaye and musical innovators such as Stevie Wonder. Despite being a newly formed group, their music has already gained traction on global radio stations.
When Michael was contemplating his next music project, his wife Aneessa, who is from France and has a deep love for funk and Classic Soul music, encouraged him to dive back into the scene. She reminded him,
"Michael, you've worked with legends like Michael Jackson, Smokey Robinson, Dionne Warwick, The Originals, Chuck Brown, Cheryl Lynn, Ray Parker Jr., Thelma Houston, Jerry Butler, Anita Pointer, Switch, and many more. You know all the top musicians who played with Marvin Gaye, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and more!!!!. There’s no one better suited to bring funk back!"
Inspired by her support, Michael decided it was time to return to the studio. The recording sessions were not just about making music; they were a celebration of funk and soul. Aneessa contributed her vocal talents by singing background alongside Sherrie Payne from the legendary Supremes, adding a unique touch to the sound. With Anessa’s French flair and the involvement of esteemed musicians, the atmosphere in the studio was electric. Everyone shared many laughs and enjoyed the process, making the creation of the album a truly joyful and unforgettable collaboration.
